Corinne Cheairs’ Role:
Construction Administrator/Project Manager
PageSoutherlandPage
Cori managed the construction of the 165,000-square foot patient tower, 21,000-square-foot services building, 850-car parking garage, 8,000-square-foot central plant, bridges connecting these new buildings to existing ones, and the overall $75 million hospital remodel. Steps in this process included planning alternate routes and road closures around the hospital, maintaining the smooth flow of ambulance traffic, keeping noise to a minimum, and assuring that staff, patients, and visitors would remain safe during the construction.

Cori ensured that the contract drawings were built per the specifications, managed all owner-requested changes, reviewed pay applications, created change proposals and reviewed their pricing, and issued field reports and punch lists. In addition, Cori kept the owner apprised of any challenges during the project and easily and skillfully coordinated last-minute changes to the operations building.

The Result:
The project was completed ahead of schedule and the owner was extremely satisfied.

Baylor College of Medicine

Houston, TX

The Situation:
More than 13 inches of rain fell in only three hours during Tropical Storm Allison, leaving the Baylor campus flooded. High water in many locations (up to 24 feet in some areas) wiped out electricity, telecommunications, and potable water. Baylor’s medical researchers were dealt an especially devastating blow because many lost lab animals, equipment, and tissue samples.

Corinne Cheairs’ Role:
Construction Administrator/Project Manager

Cori coordinated the design and construction of a flood barrier to ensure that the facilities were protected to 50 feet above mean sea level. Concrete flood barriers were installed along the front elevations of every building. The barriers included poured-in-place concrete walls, floodgates, floor doors, and a drain, sump, and sump pump system to remove water trapped behind barriers and buildings.

The Result:
During a stressful chapter in the school’s history, Cori served as a highly dependable and skilled anchor in the rebirth of the campus. The entire project was completed within budget and on schedule.

Human Neuroimaging Laboratory
Baylor College of Medicine

Houston, TX

The Situation:
Baylor wanted to build a state-of-the-art Human Neuroimaging Laboratory to house powerful, twin 3.0-Tesla Siemens MRI scanners. These scanners simultaneously analyze the brains of two test subjects who are processing the same information—a technique called hyperscanning.

Corinne Cheairs’ Role:
Construction Administrator/Project Manager

Cori coordinated the programming, lab planning, architecture, interiors, and MEP engineering of this very complex project. Approximately 9,000 square feet of space in the Smith Research Building, in a sensitive location directly above an existing vivarium, was completely gutted and rebuilt. This required the design and construction of a stainless-steel, structural raised floor system to support the MRI suite. An RFI- and magnetically shielded enclosure surrounds each of the scanner rooms, and acoustically designed walls and special sound-control doors provide protection to adjacent offices and workspaces from the very loud operation of the equipment. Offices, conference and educational workspaces, designed in concert with the lab directors and support staff, complement the MRI.

The Result:
Cori worked with the project’s inspectors to gather all concerns to correct issues before the final inspection to gain occupancy on time. The project was also completed within the budget and both the owner and contractor were very satisfied.

University of Texas Medical Branch
Virology Clinic

Galveston, TX

The Situation:
UTMB wanted to construct an outpatient virology clinic for its AIDS Care and Clinical Research Program to treat critically ill patients safely and comfortably. This facility needed to be exhausted directly to the exterior to prevent unsatisfactory air quality from entering the clinic.

Corinne Cheairs’ Role:
Construction Administrator/Project Manager
